Dear YOU,

For as long as I can remember, I've dealt with health issues. I've had mittleshmerz since I was 13 years old and there were several instances where I experienced black outs and fainting. My last black out (which I believe was back in 2015) I woke up in my bed covered in my famous yellow robe. I was later notified that my step mother had guided me there from the kitchen and my baby sis was the one who'd covered me.

You might beg to differ but blacking out and fainting is pretty embarrassing, especially when you have no recollection of the occurrence. I never thought that there could've been an underlying issue but I knew that I'd had enough. Enough of being feeble and weak and sick. So with some encouragement from a close friend and new found determination, I came to the decision of making a change by starting a fitness journey.

It was summer 2016 when I first set foot in a gym. What a better time for me to begin working on myself than during a divorce and emotional abuse within the household. The gym was the one place my thoughts were stable and I felt free in a sense (despite the eyes of middle-aged men being on me and the random comments about my figure and size.) I thought I was ok but in reality I was mentally/ emotionally suppressed.

It wasn't until the passing of my grandmother in 2017 and the change of certain circumstances in my life that I realized I also was not healthy in my mind. I no longer had the gym to escape to, so I was forced to sit with God and eventually I began to see how sick I was and how much I was really hurting. This also caused my body to acquire more ailments believe it or not. But it was more than my physique that needed tending to.

"Herbert Benson, MD, says that “negative thinking leads to stress, which affects our bodies’ natural healing capacity.” Everywhere in the Bible we find Jesus talking about hope and faith. We cannot have faith without hope. Our beliefs are like filters on a camera, changing how we see the world. Our biology—our physical being—adapts to those beliefs."

I wasn't secure in my identity in Christ. I didn't believe much of myself and the things that I went through tainted my thoughts and obscured my emotions and my ability to process the things that were happening. I needed to be like the bleeding woman in Mark 5 who's faith drove her to receive healing by just touching the edge of Jesus's robe.

"That woman had seen in her mind that she was going to be healed. She said it within herself before it happened. And she was healed. Faith is the substance of things hoped for. When we understand the power of what we believe, we will change our beliefs to the positive."

This is why it's so crucial for us to know who and whose we are. Our faith literally heals us. It begins in the mind before it's seen in the physical, so I want to encourage and empower you to begin your faith journey. Allow God to help you progress in your mental/emotional health which will then motivate you to physically take care of yourself.
